Trail Chuck Wagon
I guess I’m in the minority, but I’d consider this a black trail. I’m an intermediate rider and there were about 4 or 5 areas I couldn’t clear. Add in some tough uphill rock garden climbs, narrow twisty turns thru trees and slickrock exposure makes this, IMO, a black. Nearby blues, Aerie, Cockscomb, etc are much easier.

West bound this would be a blue. Almost all down hill and only one wash that’s challenging. Eastbound (uphill) it isn’t overly technical but is a bit relentless. Still more of a blue. Fun alternative to going to the top of Girdner.

Beautiful trail with amazing views. I don't agree with the blue rating, either this needs to be black or Aerie, Cockscomb, Rupp, Girdner, Chuckwagon need to be green because there's a very clear jump in difficulty. Quite a bit of technical climbing and exposure.

I can see this being a blast riding downhill, but riding uphill is a nightmare (especially the lower section). That being said, I’ve never seen another trail like this.

This trail is only worth riding for the aesthetics. The trail is an intermediate (at best) and marked as such by the signs around the route. There are a few short punchy climbs but otherwise it’s unremarkable. Unless you are looking to take an inexperienced rider on a visually appealing trail, its not worth it.

Agreed this should be downhill only. You can get ripping if you sprint the flats and there are lots of blind corners. Had to slam on brakes to avoid a rider coming up with their head down yesterday. I know climber right away blah blah, but this trail is one of the more fun descents around so it should be ripped down without having to worry about climbers.

Much better climbing trails nearby (mescal, long canyon) that end up in the same place.

Horrible bike trail. I got stopped for riding to fast! And i had to pull over at least 10 times for slow hikers and dogs off leash everywhere. Don't waste your time, posse grounds is better, or dry creek road trails.

Trail Rupp
If you connect to Rupp from Girdner it is an uphill workout. Lots of loose rock, but it is fine. It begins with a very steep climb coming out of the creek bed, and then a series of other uphill climbs until you get to Cockscomb. I would not go out looking for Rupp, but it is a connection to other trails and is scenic.

I would highly NOT recommend anyone starting this trail from Dawa trailhead. The majority of the traffic will be coming down towards Boynton Pass Rd. This trail is narrow, fast, tight, twisty, with lots of blind corners. There aren’t a lot of places to step aside to let anyone coming from the opposite section by. It’s also a big safety issue if you choose to ride up this trail.

I think this is one of the most beautiful and unique trails in Sedona. It runs along the base of Mescal Mountain and a good portion of it is on red slickrock. There are some techy sections, but they're easily walkable if you don't feel comfortable. I would never ride this trail again. It says intermediate but seriously there's way to much creek crossings and very difficult & rocky climbs that seem to go on forever. Granted, I was supposed to be on the section between AZ Cypress & Dry Creek rd. It may be ok on that section but miss a turn and oh boy, super difficult outing.

The numerous creek crossing ruin it for me. If they are dry that are very hard to ride due to large smooth rocks, sand, and steep loose climbs out of the creek beds. When wet you may have to wade through them.

Hoo boy, it does seem that overall the Sedona trails are over-rated in terms of difficulty. Almost all are given a single-black rating. Bit of a distortion, IMO, and might turn people off. Sure, a trail like Llama might be single black if you want to clean every foot of it. But an intermediate rider will be able to ride and enjoy most of it, and more importantly won't be freaked out be any of it. Compare that to Highline, which is a seriously difficult trail, with quite a bit of exposure and risk if you want to ride it all. Seems wrong for those two trails to have the same rating.
