This is a short loop that is great for most riders. Newer riders may find the climb up Old Post a bit challenging, but luckily its short and sweet Start at the Skywalker/Herkenham Trailhead and start off with a downhill on Herkenham. Be ready for a couple of rock moves and tight corners. Climb back up on Old Post, which has some stair-steppy sections and some sustained uphill. Hit Skywalker as you climb towards its highpoint via rolling terrain, then descend back towards the TH.

Trail Herkenham
The 60/40 Intermediate-Advanced is well deserved. I did not try this uphill, but I would imagine there would be several dismounts for most riders doing so. This is however a trail most intermediates could ride down, as its fairly quick, but only a couple sections that will really give you pause before you just bomb them. Just keep in mind this is Sedona. Most of the trail is rock, and broken rock, and plenty of loose over hard.

Trail Skywalker
Excellent intermediate trail with something for almost any rider. An experienced rider could push themselves on this, and a rider getting getting used to technical blue rocky trails won't be too intimidated by most of it. As everyone else says, there are expansive views from the ridge that are awe inspiring.

Trail Old Post
I would agree with the intermediate assessment, with a few beginner, and few expert sections. Going up will challenge your skill, and patience, and down has a few places where you can pick up real speed, but the good news is the trail is wide enough to where even the expert sections has options to get through that make it seem reasonable.

If you’re expecting an old post style beginner trail to complete the loop, beware of accidentally riding it in the uphill direction like we did. Beginners will be doing a lot of hiking. Would be a blast going downhill though.

Trail Skywalker
Fun in both directions, and a great connector and scenery trail. Blue is appropriate.

Trail Herkenham
I used this as a climb to loop with the Scorpion/Pyramid trails. It is a good physical challenge going up, with a few difficult techy bits heading up. I think this is an awesome climbing challenge uphill, it will certainly test you. I I'd imagine this is an awesome DH too, if you're not into busting your lungs uphill Smile

Trail Herkenham
Fast, fun downhill right from the trailhead. Features some well-built flow sections and open technical sections.

Trail Old Post
Ride this trail north to south (green to red). Starts out as a a flowy xc ride and ends on a wide open romp down to Chavez ranch road. There are lots of fun line choices through all the chunky rock on the downhill portion of this trail. It’s most likely the fastest climbing rout out of the hole, but you might see some fast traffic coming at you.

Trail Herkenham
This trail is a real rowdy kick in the pants if you take it in an uphill direction, but doable for fit climbers. It’s also a decent downhill, but if your looking for the longer dh romp, old post is chunky fast and has lots of fun line options. The road is the best way to climb out of hole you wind up in. If you plan on riding a trail back up maybe hiking up the first part of ridge and taking it from there is the way to go. Some riders really like to come down these trails fast.

Did Herkenham to Old Post, down OP to road. Then back up and OP to Skywalker for a loop. Lots of S-N uphill techie enough to make it 50/50, but the constant cranking up drained the tank quickly. Coming from near sea level, and 30 mph winds today also didn't help much.

Trail Old Post
Either direction has its merits on this trail. Climbing up to West Sedona is fun because of a few rock gardens that can be a challenge and followed by a great flow down on the Northside. Going south is great because its a fun downhill with good rock gardens to fly over and some fast sections. Good views the whole way.

Trail Herkenham
This is such a fun trail! It's actually pretty technical for a blue, so beginner's beware. Unfortunately there's no 'great' way to link this network up (climbing Old Post and Carroll Canyon is a grind), but definitely do Herkenham as a down NOT an up. I included it in my 10 best trails in Sedona roundup! twowheeledwanderer.com/posts/best-trails-in-sedona

Yeah what he said. From the bottom it’s just one big rocky climb. Not much fun. Do it from the north south

Took Old Post again from Herkenham to Carrol's Canyon. Positively all uphill...

Trail Old Post
Not for sure if it was Old Post or Carrol Canyon that had a really jagged, uphill, climb. Most likely have to walk this one.

Trail Herkenham
Now this was fun! Herkenham is a fast, technical, but somewhat flowy downhill trail(heading down of course)that starts at the parking lot trailhead near the high school, and winds down to Old Post. If the trail suddenly turns into a fast, smooth, but jagged and rocky double-track, then you have missed Old Post. Just an FYI. Smile

Trail Skywalker
Skywalker is a relatively flat and long-feeling mostly uphill trail(heading from Old Post to Herkenham)with a decent descent at the beginning.
