This route is most often used as a climb to access trails in the Southbelt: Whiskey, Cherry Poppins, Crown Point, SMD, and the Flume.
It also is a great out and back ride.
Drakes through to Tamarack is a great x-country ride. It covers a variety of riding conditions through a diverse environment, ranging from meadows and deciduous groves, to dark cedar forest. The riding for the first half is mostly undulating singletrack as it rolls through Drakes and Doukhobor trails. Tamarack is a long, consistent climb to a spectacular view point. Put your seat up high, flick into granny gear and power up this beautifully built singletrack trail to the top of Malde Creek FSR.
From the top trailhead, options include either turning around and descending the same route down for a super playful, flowy, intermediate descent of Tamarack Mtn, or otherwise, continuing across Malde Creek FSR to reach the trailheads of more difficult trails such as Whiskey, Cherry Poppins, Crown Point, SMD, or the Flume.
Historical Note: This area to the south of Rossland was heavily logged at the turn of the last century when the town was bustling with gold fever. The 'Doukhobor's' (a Russian pacifist sect) were brought in to log the Draw adjacent to the trail, and hence the name.
Hints: The southern end of Drakes trail exits onto Drakes Farm Road after 3 km of engaging singletrack riding. Drakes Farm Rd continues for 1 km of doubletrack (road), where all intersections are marked and recognizable. Follow the signs for Doukhobor Draw as the route often alternates between narrow singletrack and wider road.
