The full red look at Hamsterley forest. Starts with a long section of fire road, climbing and some short sections of singletrack before arriving at the top of Polty's Last Blast where fun really begins with set of great descents all linked up back down to the valley floor. The route then climbs again, up through the middle of the Descent Bike Park before descending back to the valley floor again with another set of quality descents.

Tough hills, eventually get to some good downhill sections. Second loop up the hill is a killer.

Note: from top of the hill on first loop, great views, descent is not signed up properly (take right turn to get back on route!

Great mtb trails just spoilt a bit by lack of sign posts. No way we could have found the sections without TrailForks app.

When I first did the full red loop it became pretty clear that regulars don't ride out to the far west edge of the forest because there isn't much exciting in at that end and it means you have to do that awful climb up the middle of the bike park twice (well, not all of it the first time). They just ride straight up the fire road to the start of Polty's Last Blast.

I recommend doing this route I made: www.trailforks.com/route/best-of-hamsterley

It's a mix of the red and black route, but the black is no harder than the red really. I suspect regulars to the forest do something similar, maybe working in some off-piste stuff.

Great route, but signposts and directions are shocking, they need to put some more markers and signs up, half the time we have to guess what direction we had to go.
