This is a local favorite cross country route and has featured in a few magazine articles. Well worth doing if you’re in the Dunkeld/Perth area.

I’ve described it starting from Bankfoot but it can easily be started from the Hermitage (car park off the A9 or the A822), or Dunkeld Railway Station at Birnam.

Park at south end of Bankfoot - pub and shop - and leave village up Cairneyhill Road, heading north. After Coltrannie the trail leads through Gellyburn woods via farm tracks and singletrack (take R fork) to Kingswood. Turn left and head west on private, then minor public, road to exit onto the old A9. Turn right, head downhill a few yards then left into Rohallion woods forestry track and follow this past the loch, where track swings round to right. At this point head left across to the footpath coming down from Birnam Hill. Follow this, past the quarry car park and round the bottom of the hill on a rocky path and onto a small road with some big houses.

Down a wee hill and left thro ugh gates into cool and leafy Birnam Glen. Follow burn upstream until possible to cross by footbridge then through forest to exit onto A 822. Across road and down into car park then follow path up to the Hermitage and cross the River Braan by rustic stone bridge to ‘Ossians Hall’. NB this path has been closed recently due to landslip – if still closed by-pass this section by diverting through Inver.

Enjoy the scenery here and then leave by heading up the banks of the Braan first by single track then track across fields and minor road to Rumbling Bridge - worth a look over the parapet. After crossing bridge cut hard left into trees and follow a rooty path until arriving on A822 again, opposite Balhomish Farm access. Across road and up track to top of hill where there is a gate on the right. Through the gate and along grassy/muddy track until the single track across the moor is gained. Over moor to the head of Glen Garr, a lovely wee glen and a good spot for a bite to eat. A quick, flowing, single track descent down the left side of glen to the bottom and then lift bike over fence and into field - don’t worry it’s a right of way. Carry on down through fields and track to farm. Through farm then onto the minor road which is followed back to start.
