Fun ride as an out and back. Best ridden from Driftwood to Buller then enjoy the descents back to Driftwood again.

I followed this route, and unless I missed something huge, I only had 950m elevation gain out and back.

Yes, that 1768m total elevation gain seems highly suspect to me. Maybe due to
elevation data using satellite signal, as opposed to a more accurate barometric altimeter, which not all GPS units have?
Another glaring example of this is Snakes and Ladders-
the Trailforks profile indicates 2 substantial ASCENTS on the downhill from Ranger, including one of 24 vertical meters which simply does not exist.

Packed by 3 riders from driftwood to avi closure and back(10km). Excellent snow coverage with a few sugar snow sections where you get bogged down. 2x10 with track over existing snowshoe pack for first 8km. Last 2km 2x4 width track over 1 existing fat tire track. Good fun other than last 2km. Would be good to have more traffic (snowshoe and bike) to pack and widen the track. No studs needed but fatties a must. Tons of snow and still snowing as we left late aft yesterday.
