I don’t think climbing on this trail is a bad as its reputation. It does have one tight steep squeeze that I had to hike-a-bike. Access on Middle Hawes is way worse.

A good green trail to practice your cornering and berm riding skills.

A great connector to good black diamond downhill trails. This trail is the epitome of "earn your downhill".

A great downhill trail. It only requires beginner level skills but it seems to have way more cacti (especially cholla) and rocks on the sides compared to other green trails. It ups the pucker factor when you're riding fast and at night.

Awesome trail, super fun and good rhythm. Would pile on the 'this should be a blue' bandwagon but there is definitely some exposure where a crash or bad line would send you tumbling down a fall line, so I get the rating even if it's not very technical.

Trail ratings are subjective because I'd call this a moderate blue, though definitely a flowy rush. So don't be deterred by the rating - just go rip it!

Trails marked “No E bikes”, but E bikes are everywhere here. If you ride here, be prepared to get buzzed on the uphill climbs by groups of e bikes motoring up to the fun downhill trails.

Yep. Moved over on this climb for someone I thought was pro-level XC rider (it's not often I'm passed on a climb, hella-respect if you do pass me on your own leg power)... but nope. E-bike.

Well for those who didn’t know this, you can always make a trail live up to or exceed its rating.

(May trigger a few people, but...) Rode this for the first time downhill; while the bottom/north half after the last switchback is definitely blue flowy fun (and lots of it, went on longer than expected), the top half is a different story. Lots of sharp technical switchbacks, as well as some rocky spots and drops along the way, plus (braking?) ruts for days that may not work out well for a less experienced rider using there brakes too much. Compared to other black diamonds here and around the state, definitely meets black diamond standards (albeit on the easier end of the spectrum), but definitely not a blue cruise. Also, I actually enjoyed Goat on the way to this trail and Mine later on more than this trail. To each their own...

Easy to down-grade a trail online to boost your ego, not so easy to go out and actually help build a trial. I'm guessing the trail builders had a reason for rating this a black diamond trail, they probably know what they are doing.

Note: the current trail sign at Red Mtn Rush/Goat intersection shows Lower Gidro, not Cactus Garden, in case you are looking for it starting from the ridge. Head down Lower Gidro and stay left at the fork to hit Cactus Garden.

Perfect XC-style climb, no tech, just keep pedaling! Fairly moderate start, gets a little more intense through the switchbacks at the top.

Great trail. Shame climb up Mid Hawes and Cactus Garden is such a grunt to get to this trail however.
Thanks to some great trail building and maintenance in getting this trail to shape.

Super difficult as a climb, mostly hike a bike for me. But it was over pretty quickly and then you’re right at the top of the ridge

Scorpion has recently been worked over. Better than new as most of the numerous turns have added banking. It has been smoothed and flows fast. All damage from recent rains and summer monsoon have been repaired. Its a fun downhill green for 2 miles.

I wouldn’t rate this a black. And IMO not really worth it. It’s not really flowy, and it’s not technical. Just sends you into wash after wash that you’ll have to climb up. Good for getting some calories burnt, but I’d rather have a reward at the end. Here, no rewards, not much fun.

Trail Iron Goat
Probably the only trail in the High Goats of Red Mountain route that I'd rate as a black, or dark dark blue. Pretty steep and loose in spots, and a few more technical moves required. But a fun trail, and doing the trifecta on the High Goats route is really a great way to sample these trails. I probably wouldn't do the Cactus Nectar exit again, that was pretty boring, I'll try the NRA.

Super duper fun trail! and it just keeps going! I'll definitely ride it again when i'm in the area. Not really that difficult a trail, the black rating is a bit overkill, but the trail will keep you thinking and on your toes - especially if it's dry and sandy.

Great trail with some alt jump and tech lines which are very well built and manageable for an average rider that would be comfortable on a black trail. Main line on the trail is probably more if a blue.

Don’t let the edited videos fool you. This trail is far steep and more technical than shown in many broken up sections. As a beginner who is working to challenge myself up to harder trails, this trail had me hiking quite a bit. Much more difficult than the other popular blue trail of Wildhorse.

Thank you so much for this trail! It's an easy ride up to the top of the NRA trails now. No more slogging/pushing your bike up to get the amazing DH action that makes up the NRA routes. Anyone who has pushed their bike up those will likely agree. Such a great addition.

Rode the reroute today from Ellsworth up to the new High Ridge trail. It’s all rideable now, including the switchbacks at the top. Huge improvement over the old hike-a-bike alignment. Well done, Hawes Trail Alliance.

A lot of work is being done on this trail. It doesn’t follow the original route in certain sections, so it is somewhat confusing right now, but as nature retakes the old sections, it will be easy to follow. The new sections have a lot of switchbacks that are still pretty fresh with somewhat deep gravel that is a real energy suck to climb. I did it from East to West to get to Goat, so the climb was a bit of a grind, but all doable. Coming down the old version was fun, but the new sections make this far better. Recommend doing it as a downhill; West to East.

I've only ridden down this, don't think I'd want to pedal up. My suggestion is to do a big loop around Wild Horse and come up the back side, it's mostly reasonable climbing although there's some HAB (for me) on Goat Trail. It's a ripping descent that continues into the lower system.

I’ve ridden this both ways, and it is FAR better from east to west. Very narrow and, with tight turns and up/downs, but it’s all pretty rideable and flows pretty well. It’s a lot of work, though. The trail has become far more ridden in over the past few months (I’m writing this in Jan, 201Cool , and will only get better. West to east has a lot of short, loose ups out of steep washes, and is far more difficult. I hated it in that direction, but that was also before the trail was ridden in much. This is a worthy option to complete loops at Hawes.

Clearly pretty new, but it’s in great shape. Didn’t think it was looser than anything else at Hawes. It starts out pretty fun but I didn’t care for all the dips into the cat claws in the middle. You spend a lot of time climbing back out and there’s no real reward for the effort.
