This grand loop of Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park is a popular way of experiencing the best intermediate and advanced grade tracks in the park.
After climbing Koru and Sally Alley, you drop down into Nikau Valley via Missing Link, a narrow advanced grade track that includes a couple of short steep pinch climbs, a rocky track surface in places and exposure on the outside edge of the track.
Consider riding Upswing if you are more comfortable on intermediate grade tracks.
Climbing up and out of Nikau Valley on the second half of Missing Link is relatively steep compared with other climbs in the park. Then it's on to Aratihi, the first third of which is a hard grade three, with a couple of short pinch climbs and rocky sections to negotiate, before it evens out to a more consistent gradient and trail surface as it nears the summit.
From the summit, you descend via North Face. While technically an intermediate grade track, it's a step up from Peak Flow and includes some sharper corners, off-camber trail surface in places and some rocky sections and outcrops to test your bike handling skills.
North Face leads into JFK and Smokin, a combo of fast, smooth trails with rollers, big berms and a wall ride which are lots of fun. From there you traverse a short section of Ridgeline Extension before dropping down to the car park via SWIGG (intermediate) and Starfish (which is close to advanced).
