This is right from the trail head sign in the village. I will say that there's a lot of work getting yourself up to the main 'Epic' descent, about 1400 meters of climbing in total from the trailhead. I wouldn't bring a big bike, 140mm trail bike at most, or the climbs will turn into hikes (unless you're really strong/fit). I used my old '09 Stumpjumper fsr with 120r/140f travel, which weighs in ready to go at 12.7 kg, and it was as big as I'd personally want for this ride. There's really no terrain that needs more travel, and a heavy bike would make for a long day...

The climb up Stonefly, from the Howqua Gap hut to the Bluff Spur Memorial hut, is the longest climb (about 6 klm's, 340 meters of climbing). The real problem is that from there you are sent down a fire road which takes no time, and therefore gives you no real recovery time. (NOTE: this descent via Bluff Spur trail has now been re-routed via West Summit trail and Stirling trail to rejoin the original route via Hut trail and Razorback trail) Now you're at the cafe/shop, and you start climbing again.... unless you take a break of course.

I had a couple short stops to check the map (I found it a bit confusing in the beginning), and a few times to have some food and talk with other rider's I met along the way. My ride time was just under 3 1/2 hrs and moving time was just under 3 hrs.

This is the descent that makes the whole ride worth the work. It starts off a little slow (me), but speeds up as I get a feel for the trail, and...

Soft and muddy in spots but generally pretty good. There is a medium size tree at about shoulder height blocking the trail about midway through the climb.
