This is a sensitive alpine environment, please stay on trail! Do not ride in super wet conditions or early season before snow melt.

This loop consists of the new 2017 Sproatt alpine trails. Climb up to the alpine via Into The Mystic then traverse the beautiful alpine along On the Rocks. Then it is highly recommended to make the extra journey along the Happy Hour trail to get more alpine riding and the best views of the Whistler valley. Now you are in for a treat, the descent down Lord of the Squirrels

Lord of the Squirrels is WORCA's showpiece trail has was under construction for 3 years.

The climb up into the alpine via Into The Mystic is not a tough climb, but it is long! However getting to the start of the climb on the flank trail is a steep climb for many and will be the toughest part of the journey.

There are several ways to access the start of this route.
Creekside Access
Function Access
Rainbow Park Access

Amazingly fun trail with plenty of variety in terms of little slabs, rooty sections, rock rolls and awesome views. Pay attention to the trail since it is certainly rowdy and definitely on black end of the blue spectrum. I think what makes it a blue is that there are no overly hazardous surprises or big drops. Everything is rideable for those who can ride a black trail. No real need to stop and carefully work out how to tackle a tough drop. If you are a rider who can ride a solid black trail, you can just ride with confidence the first time. The fun just keeps on coming!

Amazing climbing trail! Exceedingly well built with decent grades although some parts are quite steep. I think this trail will hold up very well long into the future since it is so solidly constructed and designed to deal effectively with drainage. It looks like plenty of thought went into the design and layout. Congratulations to the trail builders for constructing a great trail to get up to the alpine level.

We had an amazing time on this trail. Spectacular views, superb trail creation. Thanks to everyone who made this happen. Definitely between a blue square and black diamond considering the approach. Loads of rad rock rolls and rock gardens, punchy climbs, incredible views. We rode it on a perfectly dry day, if it were wet at all this would be a solid black diamond. Take your time and kick some trail karma dollars to WORCA!

This is tough on an XC bike. For a blue it’s at the rootier/rockier end of the spectrum.

Awesome trail but it should not be rated blue - the length and number of features back to back along should make it a black.

Dissapointed to meet more e-bikers than normal bikers in the early morning. When informing about the «no e-bikes rule,» one of them told me «Everyone sucks these days, I paid for this trail.» The deep tire marks in the trail following them made it even more clear to me why this rule is in place to conserve such an amazing trail.

Aug 10, 2022: be prepared to be swarmed by flies and horseflies. They were biting through 4 layers of bug spray + through clothes and knee pads. Make sure you wear deet or DON’T STOP while you’re riding up. Pretty miserable if you do. Higher you go, more flies.

Dark Crystal has very bad signage, so people may be genuinely ignorant. I hate seeing dogs or e-bikers on Sproatt, because regardless of if you're right or not, the rules say no, and you've definitely seen signs about it. And if you're violating the rules, you could have alpine access taken away for all of us. So it's a selfish a*shole thing to do.

That sucks to hear about e-bikes on Dark Crystal, one of my fav’s when here in Whistler. Lame. And especially on Mystic/Squirrels and Comfortably Numb. If you’re injured or over 65 then maybe. The effort it takes to get to most of these trails keeps the volume of traffic down and preserves the trails without constant erosion and required maintenance. The world just keeps getting fatter and lazier I suppose. Don't be scared to work a little bit in life for your goals…… and if you ride 7 days a week 365 and thats your excuse then take a damn day off once in a while so you dont need assistance getting to the top. Just my 2 cents.

Currently only upper Into the Mystic is closed. Still open as far as LESS. Should split this trail into Upper and Lower Into The Mystic in TrailForks so status can be accurately represented. Pretty common at beginning and end of season for this trail to be half open.

Rode this trail on Sept 12th -- smoky in the valley but clear up top! basically had perfect conditions -- clear, dry, no bugs. what a brilliant trail. I don't have enough words for how much I enjoyed this loop. wished we'd left ourselves enough time for some of the black trails at the top but I'll be back again, this is no longer just a bucket list item. Thanks to all for the hard work you put in, Trail People! Making my donation now....

Just because you can ride doesn’t mean you can ride down, that thought process has no rational to it.
I get that it would bring more traffic that’s a fare statement!
We were up Dark Crystal the other day and there was more Ebikes then not.
It’s only matter of time really so maybe Worca can figure out something to make it work.

I feel as though it comes down to the volume of riders up there. It's a deilicate ecosystem. Fewer is better. This is not a lift access trail for a reason.
Plus consider the rider's ability. You are a long way from help. And the descent... Squirrel... is more a technical black than a blue. I've ridden easier black diamonds...
Those that get there under their own steam are at least fit enough, and one would hope skilled enough to make it down.
I support no Ebikes for that reason.

Further, don't rob yourself of the victory, man! I was spent by the time I got back to the car the last time I rode Squirrel. I ran out of water half way down... note to self, bring more water...
I don't know how you feel when you get to the top on an assist bike, but it can only feel like a shadow of the real thing.

Canada should adopt the New Zealand trail grading system, which has a total of 7 different trail gradings. It's better than the IMBA in my opinion, which only has 6. NZ has all the same trail ratings as the IMBA, but they add a Dark Blue (Grade 4) trail rating/grading, in between Blue (Grade 3) and Black (Grade 5).

While the UK has something similar with the Red Triangle, in between Blue and Black.
The Euro/UK (Forestry Commission) trail grading system has even less trail gradings, with only 5 in place.

I really like the idea of the Dark Blue "double-blue" trail grading. It would be really sweet if we adopted that in North America too Big Grin

Maybe it was built too steep for the conga line of traffic on it as it’s mostly just roots already. Alpine section was built with great flow but that kind of ends in the forest and feels like a cross country trail. Go ride Angels Staircase in WA for a more interesting alpine trail adventure.

That's what happens when the trail burden exceeds the planning figures (170 rides in the last week alone - not including all the riders who never log anything on Trailforks) and when riders won't adjust their ride plans to account for recent weather, rather than just what is happening on the day they have off/ are planning on riding LOTS, and won't go and ride another trail instead. Still a great trail, just a more black blue than a blue blue and less fit/ less capable riders should stay away from it (please).

if you aren't experienced in descending long, semi-technical trails, then it's very likely you will find this descent extremely challenging, especially after climbing for 2-3 hours, and only riding trails for a couple months. Ultimately only you can judge your skill level, but it is a technical blue under the Whistler trail standards, which allows for rougher conditions and roots and rocks than you may be accustomed to. It is NOT capped gold and smooth top to bottom.

In today's heat this was a brutal climb - especially when it ducks out of the trees into the sunshine. But it was worth every pedal stroke to ride the descent. LOTS is tons of fun. There were long segments of the trail where I could get completely off the brakes and just let the bike run - and I've never ridden it before (if I knew the trail I could really let it go).

The views are breathtaking and the track is fun. Highly recommended. Just beware that it is hard for a blue run. Lots of steeper sections and janky turns. I even heard a couple at the exit saying "phew, we survived that".
