This route crosses a variety of terrain, passes through a rainforest and provides some spectacular views. Along route 4 there is a section marked Alt 4. This alternative route is very boggy and has not been modified. This route is only accessible in dry weather and traverses the original road built in 1870 to connect Tewantin to Gympie, via Cooran.

The new quarry near Kin Kin appears to have blocked the route.
