There are a lot of trails on the Provo Bench, and it is not easy to know which are official and which are social. This loop has recently become one of my favorite rides thanks to Blazing Trailz and all their work in fixing Betty, Frank 033 GWT, and the Dragon's Back section of the GWT. Almost every trail in this ride is an official USFS trail. Only one short section on Buckle Trail which avoids the washed out sections of the Lament (051) Trail.

The route starts off from Timpanogos Park, and takes you on the easiest route to Bear Necessities. This is an easy and smooth climb through the old Provo Race Course that brings you up to the Water Tank Road (which is officially part of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail). The last bit to the road is a punchy climb where you connect to Betty. From here you can go straight up the GWT if you just want to get to the top of the DH as soon as possible. I like to climb through the scrub oak on Buckle and connect to the GWT using the Area 51 trail because it takes you to some other fun spur trails like Three Amigos with some great views of Cascade Mountain.

The downhill basically is all of the Great Western Trail as it winds down past the Altar and dumps you out on the dirt road. From here you have a short but flat pedal to the GWT section called "Dragons Back". I used to take this all the way to the old Provo River bridge, but there is some construction, so pull out to the gravel road and head back to the car.

What is the intended direction of travel? Climb Bear Necessities and descend GWT/Dragons Back?

A good meandering trail up the hillside, but must agree with previous report that the tall grass can sting when you get a little speed
