What I consider to be the best cross country riding on the island. Miles of enjoyable, well maintained trails for riders of all skill levels.
Pupukea is in the same neighborhood as the West Kaunala Trail on the North Shore of O'ahu at Pupukea. Park down by the beach and ride to the trail through the Sunset Hills subdivision to add an extra climb. If you don't like riding on the pavement, there is parking at the trail head.
First off let me say, this place is a maze. It is very easy to get turned around. I had to ride it several times before I started to figure out where I was. I wouldn't recommend going alone, bring a buddy and a phone.
The trail is well maintained. Thanks to whoever is out there cutting, digging and putting up all the signs. Overall the trail is not to technical but enough to keep you interested. It varies a lot as well. Smooth single track in the trees, open bowl areas, some steady climbs, smooth flowing downhills, jeep road, a little bit of everything. You can get on your bike at Pupukea and ride for hours and hours without ever getting off. The trails crisscross so much that you can pretty much pick your route as you go, changing it to suit your fancy.
When I want to pretend I know how to ride cross country, this is my place.
