Le "Causse Rouge" est un avant causse calcaire appuyé aux contreforts du Lévézou, avec un ensemble de plateaux et de croupes s'étageant en paliers vers 600 m d'altitude. Dans ce secteur, les dolmens, héritages de la préhistoire, sont nombreux. Ces monuments funéraires ont délivré une quantité importante d'ossements humains, sans distinction de sexe ni d'âge, ainsi que des parures de perles et des pointes de silex. Certains dolmens ont été détruits ou détériorés par l'agriculture et les aménagements modernes. Leur imposante stature servait aussi à délimiter un territoire ou affirmer la puissance d'une tribu. Les dolmens étaient visibles de loin dans la mesure où les causses étaient déboisés.
