From the head of Wellington Harbour, the Remutaka Cycle Trail circumnavigates the bush-clad Rimutaka Mountain Range, passing through tunnels on an old rail trail, and skirting around the wild southern coast.

The first stage is an easy riverside cycle path called the Hutt River Trail. There are plenty of scenic picnic areas beside this large river and great swimming spots to cool off on a hot summer’s day as the trail gradually climbs to the head of the Hutt Valley.

Beyond the valley the trail enters the Tunnel Gully Reserve on what was once the main railway line between Wellington and the Wairarapa. Riders will then cross the northern tip of the Rimutaka Range on the Rimutaka Rail Trail, one of the most popular and historic trails in the region.

After emerging in the Wairarapa, famous for vineyards and sheep farming, the trail follows a country road past Lake Wairarapa to Ocean Beach. The final section is the shortest, but also the most adventurous. Aptly named The Wild Coast, it skirts around Turakirae Head, where the Rimutaka Range dives into the pounding Pacific Ocean.

This is recommended as a 2-3 day trip, but can be done in 1 day if fit. Most riders choose to do this in a clockwise direction due to the incline trail at the north end.

Get the weather right and this is a spectacular ride. Pick a day with strong winds and you'll wish you weren't born.

It's the coastal bits that are really exposed to the wind. The Wild Coast section is quite a lot rougher than the rest - best done on a mountain bike, where as the rest could be reasonably done on a CX or adventure bike. It involves about a km of pushing on soft sand. Very spectacular on a good day.

Very dry forest service road, runs along the old railway line route so mostly constant grade. Some steeper sections up near the top. Great easy access track to the other singletrack trails dropping off it like gdrop, timestables and lower pig track.
