REQUIRES LOW WATER LEVELS ON THE NORTH BRANCH OF THE PATAPSCO RIVER. The Marriotsville to Woodstock section includes a ford of the North Branch which should only be attempted at levels where your feet don't get wet when peddling; this can occur during dry periods of mid to late summer and during the autumn and early winter ('going for it' in fast moving water can easily be fatal and it has nothing to do with skill, only intelligence).

This is a classic tour of single track trails in the valley of the 1831 rail line between Ellicott City and Sykesville, Maryland. Variations are possible, but this combination minimizes the time on any roads and hits most of the trails which make this such a highly acclaimed mountain biking area.

At the end you can reward yourself at the restaurants in Ellicott City. You'll need two pictures, one at the Sykesville rail station and one at the Ellicott City rail station.

This route is designed so at no point should you be riding on the railroad track. Riding on the railroad track is sort of like going for it in fast moving water, except that going for it in fast moving water isn't illegal.
