This is a really popular route at Heil. It's great for putting on more miles than just the Ponderosa Loop.

Back when I was young, I though the real Van Halen was back when David Lee Roth led the band. He did karate kicks and looked over his sunglasses and smiled. But, the truth is that Diamond Dave was really just a showman who didn't sing well and couldn't write a great tune ("Ice Cream Man" is a cover song). Sammy was just so much a nicer, funner guy. He even created a decent tequila company. Sammy wrote great songs.

The Diamond Dave route is a lot like Dave himself. It's really popular, but people mistake a couple of fun swoopy sections for a great route. You end up riding up the technical rocky bit of Wild Turkey. Riding down this instead (see the Van Hagar) is amazing with great jumps and drops. Who wants to ride up drops? OK, this is Boulder, I get it. People like technical climbs. But, Diamond Dave is a few great hits with a quite a bit of meaningless ups and downs that leave you right back where you started.

I'm being hard on Diamond Dave. Really. I mean, like "Hot for Teacher" and "Running with the Devil" the swoopy stuff on Ponderosa is good times. So is the bit in the trees on Wild Turkey. You'll just see me and all the badass ladies and gents coming down Wild Turkey's fun jumps in the opposite direction.

The Route:
1. Go up Wapiti
2. Left on Ponderosa Loop
2.a. Grunt on the climb and then giggle all the way down the the overlook
3. Hit Wild Turkey Trail (the furthest option to the left)
3.a Here is Dave's second big hit. Enjoy the fun switchbacks through the woods
4. Turn right to stay on Wild Turkey
4.a. Now comes all the misery of the climb.
5. Left onto Ponderosa Loop
6. Left onto Wapiti and back down to the car
7. Mandatory tacos and/or adult beverages at Wapos in North Boulder
8. Drink until you no longer have Dave's cover version of "Dancing in the Streets" out of your head.
9. You could have been listening to this by Sammy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvV3nn_de2k
