No, this isn't the Tour de France. However, you might wonder if perhaps you've made a wrong turn and stumbled into one of the Tour's mountain stages. Fear not, you're still in San Diego, not leading a peloton in the Alps, though for good measure you might consider wearing a yellow jersey. Welcome to Black Mountain, where climbing is part of the fun.

This route is a tour of the best at Black Mountain. It includes all the newer trails such as Black Widow, Manzanita Loop, Awhee, and Lilac. It also includes old favorites such as Miner's Ridge Loop (eastern half). Bring your climbing skills because this route requires them, but you'll be rewarded with descents that range from fast and flowy to rocky and rowdy.

A few things to note:

1. The trails are mostly intermediate, but they contain a few advanced sections. Watch your speed if you aren't familiar with the area so you aren't surprised by a rock garden.

2. Please bring a bell. The trails are two-way and filled with hikers and other riders. Sightlines are often limited.

3. Use caution when crossing Carmel Valley Road. Cross only at the light and don't assume that cars will stop for the red light.

4. All the trails are sanctioned and legal.

5. The route is suitable for intermediate riders but be advised that Black Mountain trails tend to be rocky. Enjoy them and the view from the summit of Black Mountain
