The Beartrap Gulch loop includes three miles of easy climbing along Trout Creek Canyon, followed by a moderate forest road climb to the top of the ridge. From the top, there is a long flowy downhill down Beartrap Gulch back towards Trout Creek. The upper half of Beartrap Gulch is the best flowing singletrack in the Helena area. Watch for some waterbar/whoops in the tall grass in the last half-mile.

Please notify the Montana Bicycle Guild of any issues with this trail.

The ride begins at Vigilante Campground, 8 miles past York. Ride up the Trout Creek Canyon Trail for about three miles, to USFS Road 138. From there, turn left and start climbing. Turn left onto USFS Road 4119, and stay with the main line of 4119, ignoring all the spurs until the top of the ridge. The Beartrap Gulch singletrack is on the left just as you crest the ridge.

This reminds me of an old school ride: after a fairly level double-track and singletrack jaunt through the impressive Trout Creek Canyon, there's a steady jeep road climb to the start of the singletrack downhill. The 4-mile (6.5km) downhill is superb. It starts with some long traversing switchbacks through open dry forest, where you can really get up some speed. Further down, the forest becomes greener and denser, and the trail starts taking a more direct line down the mountain. You'll definitely grin and holler!
