Going north from the end of the road in Elk Valley, watch for a wooden trail sign high in a tree to your left marking the start of the trail. The trail is maintained to a moderate standard and is passable to hikers and stock, though a few trees are down, as far as the first pass. This is approximately 1.5 miles from the trailhead, just past a small, high tarn. From that point the trail descends very steeply to a meadow crossing, then ascends extremely steeply to a ridge south of Sawtooth Mountain. This section of trail has not received recent maintenance. It crosses an area burned in a wildfire several years ago. There are a number of down trees, and the way can be indistinct in places. It is passable for hikers, but may be very difficult for stock. From the ridge top, descending to Elk Hole, parts of the trail were obliterated from effects of the fire. The going is extremely difficult, and the footing on very steep slopes is very bad.
