Campbell Tract is a very easy introduction to riding in Anchorage. With a mix of relatively flat singletrack and doubletrack, it's also very family and beginner friendly.
There are a number trails that make logical loops of any distance. The ride featured here is a clockwise tour that connects scenic singletrack with cruiser doubletrack.Start from Smoke Jumper Trailhead and ride clockwise on Moose Track, a crushed gravel doubletrack. Right away you'll get pulled into the beautiful dense forest.
Passing the intersection with Coyote continue on to Salmon Run, a short singletrack that parallels Campbell Creek. Jump back onto a road and then stay straight at the bridge to start Mellen's Way.
From here the crushed gravel continues for a short distance before turning to natural surface singletrack after the Birch Knob junction. Now the ride feels a little more backcountry. Navigate a few root sections along fairly flat trail.
Bear right on Moose Meadow. The trail widens to doubletrack and passes Black Bear (connection to Hillside Park). The forest opens up into meadow with a few views of the Chugach Mountains to the east.
Moose Meadow intersects with Viewpoint - turn left here and ride another section of crushed gravel doubletrack. Punch up a short steep hill before reaching the junction with Coyote. Stay left and then turn right on Birch Meadow.
The route narrows back to singletrack again and the forest tightens up. Birch Meadow contours up and down a bit with the natural terrain, a nice change from the rest of the trail in the Campbell Tract.
Turn right and pedal a short road section before a left on Lynx. Like Birch Meadow, this segment is fun singletrack and a great way to end the ride.
Disclaimer
Bears are present in the area, especially along the creeks. Be sure to read the bear aware signs at trailheads and plan your ride accordingly. No need to be 'bear-a-noid', just make noise and travel in a group.
