Beginner 10%, intermediate 60 % and advanced 30%, 1.2 mile MTB trail which is a bi-directional, but mainly ridden north to south. The north end of the trail starts off of the lower Mescal trail. The upper end of the trail rides several hundred yards on a singletrack before ending a a narrow eroded wash that has wall ride sections for higher skilled riders to rail on.

After the upper wall ride section ends you once again ride on a singletrack to the lower Canyon of Fools section. The lower section is basically a very eroded wash with ten foot high walls that are suitable for wall rides enjoyed by advanced skilled riders. Lesser skilled riders could have issues with some of the features since they are natural in character and if not ridden properly could end up in a crash that may cause injury. The preferred direction is northeast to southwest and the trail is a great connector for several other fun loops.

Access Info

Access off of Mescal to the north and Boynton Canyon road to the south. The middle can be accessed from the West end of the Yucca trail.

Definitely bombed out a bit after this year's monsoon season. It rides very differently than it did when I last rode it in May. Very washed out....

Wall rides/berms are undercut and pretty much unrideable. Extremely Rocky with recent flooding. Trail is in really rough shape.

Dream trail. River bottom trails are the best natural terrain hands down. Ride Mescel and circle around for a lap on COF. So good

Unlike any other trail in Sedona. It's literally a canyon with fun wall rides and kickers. Not sure I would call it a black, though... I wrote up a blog post about the 8 best trails in Sedona (in my opinion) and Canyon of Fools is one of them twowheeledwanderer.com/posts/my-eight-favorite-mountain-bike-trails-in-sedona-arizona

I would highly NOT recommend anyone starting this trail from Dawa trailhead. The majority of the traffic will be coming down towards Boynton Pass Rd. This trail is narrow, fast, tight, twisty, with lots of blind corners. There aren’t a lot of places to step aside to let anyone coming from the opposite section by. It’s also a big safety issue if you choose to ride up this trail.

This should be downhill only. Mostly because the downhill is A MOTHA F'IN SHRED!

Agreed this should be downhill only. You can get ripping if you sprint the flats and there are lots of blind corners. Had to slam on brakes to avoid a rider coming up with their head down yesterday. I know climber right away blah blah, but this trail is one of the more fun descents around so it should be ripped down without having to worry about climbers.

Much better climbing trails nearby (mescal, long canyon) that end up in the same place.

I can see this being a blast riding downhill, but riding uphill is a nightmare (especially the lower section). That being said, I’ve never seen another trail like this.
