A long rolling climb along the Continental Divide brings you to the top of Butte's East Ridge. This singletrack sees light travel and can be rough after big rains. The saddle where this portion of CDT ends is well signposted. You can descend the way you came, take the direct route back to town via Maud-S Trail, or continue on towards Our Lady of the Rockies (large statue overlooking Butte)

Access Info

Exit I-90 at Homestake Pass and park north of the interstate in a large gravel lot on the right. Find the CDT where the road crosses the railroad tracks.

Super fun out and back, dry and sandy, but there are a couple of trees down across the trail about 1/2 a mile in. Easy to carry a bike over though

Very fun ride, lots of sand in the trail and very dry. One of my favorite Sunday rides around butte. The downhill coming back towards homestake is a lot more fun in my opinion than going down Maud S. I usually do an out and back with my turn around point being where the maud s trail starts.

From Homestake Pass the first mile or so is a bit of an ass kicker. After that it still climbs but it is very flowy. Super sweet. I only went in 5 miles then turned around. Coming back out is one of the best XC downhills you will ever do.
