Climb up to the Rainbow trail quickly. This trail allows you to skip the steep 2 track climb up to the Rainbow trail Bear Creek trailhead. Instead you can climb this steep singletrack up. While not a very technical trail, it will take some persistent legs and strong lungs to make your way from the dry valley up to higher mountain forest. The first half climbs steeply with a few switchbacks. It mellows out a bit up higher.
You do cut off several prime miles of Rainbow trail if you do choose to climb Columbine instead of the CR 101 (Bear Creek) 2 track.
Columbine makes an OK downhill as well. Watch for awkward corners.
Take County Road 101 south from Highway 50. There is a parking lot at this trailhead.
