Cougar Creek Trail Details
Cougar Creek is old horse/hiking trail that has been newly refreshed by the Prineville COTA chapter. It is typically ridden east to west often with a shuttle at the west (lower) trailhead, though many people enjoy it as an out and back, as setting up the shuttle can take nearly as long as just riding back up the hill.
Start from the east trailhead with a descent with a gentle 3 mile climb to the high point at the gravel quarry (this is a good location to start from if you are just looking for some downhill kicks). From the quarry the trail drops for the next 4 miles to Scotty Creek and the west trailhead.
While the trail has been receiving a lot of much needed love, it is still very much an old school trail so be on the lookout for exposure, steep off-camber tread, and blind, hairpin turns coming at you at high speed!
While this trail itself isn't necessarily worth a long drive for, it can be a great addition to a weekend of camping and riding in the Ochocos, along with Lookout Mountain Trail and Round Mountain Trail. Also, stay tuned for many more miles of mountain bike trails in the area that is are the agenda to be rehabbed in the near future!
