In 1997, more than 100 contributors raised $225,000 for HCT to purchase 16 acres of rolling woodland from the Stewart family to protect wildlife habitat, walking trails, salt marsh views, and the water quality of Coy’s Brook, the main tributary to the Herring River. Over the years, adjacent lands were purchased by and donated to HCT.
Preserving the land helps to protect groundwater that flows to Coy’s Brook and the Herring River on which so many creatures depend. Walk trails through quiet woods, along a dike through an old bog long since grown into red maples. Peer skyward through a stand of Atlantic white cedars, an uncommon habitat across the Cape.
