A premier West Coast mountain bike ride. The Croesus Track is accessed by going through the town of Blackball. Either park in town and begin your ride from here or carry on driving through town towards Roa Mine. Turn right onto a steep gravel road, which ends at the Smoke-ho car park. The ride up to Ces Clark Hut from here follows a very well preserved miners’ track that is excellent for mountain biking.

The trail has an achievable gradient with long rideable uphill sections. It is rocky and technical in places and more difficult to ride when wet and rainy. However, when you finally reach the hut the view is superb and the ride back down is phenomenal.

Track upgrades: In 2011-2012 the DOC Greymouth Team worked long hours for several months restoring the track from Ces Clark Hut down to Smoke-ho Car park. Dry rock stone work was used extensively to build the track back up to the high original standard set by the old gold miners.

Heli-biking: The quickest way to the top is by helicopter. Local pilots will fly you and your bike up there for $100-$150 per person depending on how many friends you arrange on the day.

Time: At a steady pace expect it to take 3-4 hours to reach Ces Clark Hut.

Great trail, bit of a huff to the tops but amazing scenery and a wicked descent. For the folks who love an extra challenge the Barrytown descent to the coast is supposed to be pretty intense!

Great winter ride with almost no mud. Took us 3 hours to reach the hut at a easy-moderate pace, the descent would take about half that time. There is an older second hut located 15 metres below the main hut which has now been renovated for sleeping in, this sleeps an additional 3 - although has no facilities and would be cold. The main hut has great views, is warm and has a fireplace (with plenty of coal). The challenge of the ascent is because of the large loose and slippery rocks, rather than the gradient.
