Dry Creek Details
Riding areaBelmont Regional Park
Trail typeDirt/Gravel Road
Bike typeAM, XC
Climb DifficultyBlack Diamond
SeasonSlippery when wet but rideable
Dry Creek is a deviation from Boulder Hill. Ride up the Boulder Hill access road and turn right at the first seat you come to (the seat is there for a reason, you may want to take a breather). These tracks are unmaintained access tracks in Belmont Regional Park. On occasion they are used for various reasons (for example in 2014 the tracks were to lay a fibre optic cable across the hills from the Hutt Valley to Porirua)but most of the time see no traffic other than walkers and riders.
The trail is a combination of 3 uphill sections (including the first stage which is the Boulderhill track) and 3 down hill sections. The first 2 downhills are relatively short with very steep climbs after them. The second of the downhills is through open farm land and is very flowy - but slippery when wet. The final downhill moves from a flowing track to a rutted and very steep (18%) gravel track with a tight turn right at the bottom. The ruts move from side to side.
This can be a long ride for the distance. Expect between 40 minutes (for the fit) to 1 hr 30. It gets very hot in summer (and the cicada's can be leathal) but is quite sheltered in the winter (although wet and slippery).
Access is from the Belmont Regional Park entry at Dry Creek. Turn off SH2 at the Haywards lights and take your first left and then right. Take the steep track to the left of the information sign and then right at the top on the gravel road.
This area has been victim to car break ins in the past so either make sure you take all your valuables with you or consider parking further up thge hill opposite the quarry (which is where some of the Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed).
