This is an approximately 10 mile hike with significant elevation gain. This hike combined two three trails in the Tillamook State Forest: Elk Mountain Trail, Kings Mountain Trail, and Wilson River Trail.

The trail is easy to follow, has good signage, and is well maintained thanks to efforts by the Mazamas Club. Most of this hike is in treed areas but regularly approaches cliffs where one can has beautiful views of the surrounding forest. The trail, when it is going up or down, tends to be very steep and requires the use of hands to scale rocks or steep paths at various points. This climbing, however, is not technical in nature and no ropes are needed (one particularly steep section on loose soil has a rope tied to a tree to help hikers, but the rope is not necessary).

The trial can be hiked in either direction. One good option is to begin at the Elk Mountain Trailhead and proceed counterclockwise (towards Elk Mountain) in a north/northwest direction first, then proceed to the junction with Kings Mountain Trail, turning southwest towards Kings Mountain and proceeding to the Kings Mountain summit before hiking downhill to the junction with the Wilson River Trail. At this junction the hiker can proceed east along the Wilson River trail (which is within hearing distance of Highway 6) back to the Elk Mountain Trailhead.
