This is a Finnish bikepacking classic, a long and demanding route with lots of river crossings, sandy or soft ATV tracks and endless fjells. The route goes by a sami village Kalkujärvi that is used in early summer. Pöyrisjärvi hut is open to all.
The small (but soft and DEEP) river right next to the Pöyrisjärvi hut is crossed by making a detour in the lake, about 15 meters from shore. The water is knee deep.
Occasionally there is a small ferry accross a small but DEEP strait less than two kilometres east from the hut, but if not, you have to swim or go upstream a few kilometres to cross. The route shows both options.
The route goes on sandy shore of Pöyrisjärvi. Normally it is rideable, but if water is very high, you have to wade for 2 km (!).
The mouth of Pöyrisjoki river is crossed in the lake. Make a big detour about 50 m from the shore, and start it about 20 m before the river. The water should be knee deep, or up to the waist if water is extremely high. The bottom of the lake is good, so crossing should not be a problem.
Do NOT try to cross the river. It is deep and soft. Go to the lake.
There is a jeep track from Näkkälä village to Pöyrisjärvi hut. The track is NOT open to cars, but it is rather easy to ride.
