Great singletrack between Cross Mountain (Lizard Head) and Dunton Meadows. Groundhog follows along the Lizardhead Wilderness boundary but is non-motorized multi-use. This is one of the few rolling and not very steep trails in the area. Out-and-back, loop with the Dunton Road and Highway 145, or shuttle. If you are a beast, use this as your start for Calico.

Access Info

North end is at Cross Mountain trailhead. South end is at Dunton Meadows just east of Eagle Peak road.

Not horrible but a few low spots holding water from all the rain we have been getting.

I've ridden Groundhog Stock trail three times this summer... Conditions are great!

I recommend riding it from north to south. To create a loop, we park at the Dunton Road entrance off of Highway 145 and ride up the highway to the Cross Mountain trailhead parking lot on Lizard Head pass.

Head up the Cross Mountain Trail for less than a mile, to the intersection with the Groundhog Stock trail, then head south. The first 2-3 miles are pretty stiff climbing but very doable. Then descend, super fun, down to the bridge across slate creek. From the bridge there's an undulating and gradual climb up to the meadows, then you head across the meadows back to the Dunton road and down to the highway. Fun, fun!
