Despite efforts of generations of residents and the promises of multi-level governments throughout the years 1897-1939, the dream for an "iron road" was never realized in Guysborough County.
The legacy of this old railway cut from the countryside is the Guysborough Nature Trail. A group of County residents came together in 1994 to form the Guysborough County Trails Association. They are proud to be the first official section of the Trans Canada Trail in Nova Scotia, opening in 1996. Since then the Association has developed more than 44km of front and back country trails for year round enjoyment.
