The Hawes (Rocky) trail loop starts in Las Siendas and takes you up the mountain pretty steeply at first until you crest just below the towers does it start to level up and head back around and then down the mountain. Down is really great. Up is challenging and peppered with rocks and crushed granite. Tight switchbacks and lots of sections suffering from erosion. Down is flows nicely with berms and drop offs from the erosion control as you get down lower. Connects into the rest of Hawes or you can keep right and take a further loop around the mountain.

Access Info

Trail starts at the corner of where Hawes Rd and Mountain Ridge connect. There is private property on both sides of the trail, so the actual trail head seems to be the best way to get there. Well Marked train sign.

Just rode the trail on 7/22/17 and the trail in several areas has been washed out due monsoon rains. So its a little rough. Also I personally would put the climb at the beginning a double black diamond.

Possible the entrance you were at might be on or near private land. The Hawes trails are apart of the Tonto National Forest and I have ridden there many times without any issues. I cannot imagine something being part of a National Forest be private as it is on public land.

Below is a link to google maps of where I always enter. I have not entered through any other entrances.

The trail is public. The owner of the big home on the south side of the formal entrance about 500 yards east from Hawes Road is infamous and probably the person claiming it’s not.
