The rides begins with a pretty big climb which provides some great views of Castle Peak, you'll have the opportunity to go up to Andesite Peak as well for some added climbing. From the top of the first and longest climb in the beginning its game on for the rest of the ride, which is a mixture of rocky, rooty, and granite slab single track. There are a few jumps and fun granite rock wall rides etc to be had along the way You'll ride through some high sierra foliage and fauna, and work you way in a loop back toward highway 80. The middle of the ride is shaded and at high elevation and tends to hold snow late into the year...
There are some technical ascents that are tough to clear and the ride is at elevation so for the Granite Bay guys, get ready to open your lungs. Be sure to stop lake side at Lower Lola Montez Lake for a quick dip near the end of the ride.

Half a dozen downed trees, a few small snow patches, and a few river crossings. Totally rideable.
      Jun 26, 2022 @ 2:49pm
      Jun 26, 2022
Still a few short snowy sections, easy to walk across. But the river crossings are harder to walk across, be prepared to get your shoes wet.

Still lots of snow pack in sections and plenty of downed trees. Was more of an adventure than a mountain bike ride. Would give it a few more weeks.

Awesome trail with lots of variety of terrain. We parked at the start and the ride back along the road and then bunny hill drive was not fun so consider taking two cars!

This trail took us 4h to complete. First 1/4th is very smooth..the next half 2,3/4 of trail gets more technical and we walked as much as we rode our bikes. There were a few portions that were completely impossible to ride. The last portion of the trail we walked down the stairs for 10 minutes. This trail is not easy so make sure you get an early start unless your an experienced biker

The trail difficulty has been revised and the stair section added as a separate "double black diamond" trail. I wouldn't call any of it impossible since I've rode it all including the stairs. I think the original "intermediate" rating it had was misleading many riders through so I hope this helps.

This was a great trail. Yes it is not an introduction to mtb but certainly all rideable and lots of advanced alternative lines. The trail work was impeccable. Donated immediately. Initial climb is beautiful and smooth

Fantastic trail, rose counter clockwise but could easily be done in he opposite direction. beautiful lakes, some tiny patches of snow in the sides of the trail. Winter will be here soon!

Great trail with beautiful views. Maybe it’s a regional thing, but in the NW this would be more of a blue than a black trail. Semi long, but nothing too technical about it. The stairs are rideable and not too bad.

The work Truckee Trails Foundation has put in on this trail really shows. Many of the highly eroded sections have been armored with pavers, so the long and steady decline of tread has been dramatically slowed (as long as people ride the trail/pavers). Don’t worry, the trail has not been dumbed down, there’s still plenty of little challenges and chunky fun spread out through the miles. And if you dab foot, you didn’t ride the whole thing clean ;-). BTW, much like ski resort run ratings, yes they can vary from region to region, state to state, country to country. One person‘s cruise, can be another person‘s nightmare.

I ride this trail quite a few times every season and have done it all the different ways - by far my favorite is to do it as a there and back from the Castle Peak trailhead with a turnaround at Lower Lola Lake. It’s a hard ride for the mileage and feels uphill both ways but wow what an awesome 3 hour ride!

Looking forward to trying the trail, do any of you know if it's practicable now?
