Horse Creek Loop Details
This trail can be ridden as a loop, or could be ridden as an out-in-back. There are actually three trails which make up the loop: Horse Creek-Cattle Creek-Lower Twin Lake. It is steep. The climb to the top ends with a beautiful vista of Twin Lakes and the surrounding area. The decent is even more steep and exposed. IMO it is a better ride to turn around and follow the same trail down. If you continue, the trail ends at one of the lakes and continues lakeside until reaching the point where you began the trail The lake-side bit is fairly technical and very fun. Unfortunately, the lake-side trail has a hike-a-bike section in the middle. Sadly, a better trail in this same zone (Barney Lake) is designated wilderness and is therefore 'unlawful' to ride.
Stage at Mono Village Campground (RV park). Enter the campground and stay left. Follow the short dirt path to a creek and cross a wide, wooden bridge. Cross the creek again on a second rickety bridge. There will be a trail on the left which follows the lake (this is where the trail will finally exit). Continue up the hill where a forest service sign marks the trail.
