Trailhead on the south end is at the Eagle Valley Center near Amalga Harbor. The trail connects on the north end to the Boy Scout Trail about 1/3 mile from the parking lot. No steep pitches, but moderate uphill sections. The trail also provides access to the CBJ Parks and Recreation Eagle Landing beachfront cabin via a spur trail about 1/2 mile from the south trailhead.
The Horse Tram trail is named after an historic mining route that parts of the trail follow. In the early 1900s, miners discovered a gold deposit near Eagle Glacier, and built a horse tram with steel rails for horses to haul cart loads of mining supplies from the Eagle Landing beach just north of Amalga Harbor to the mine site, and to haul the gold ore back to Eagle Landing for loading on ships.
