This trail enters the Mt Hood Wilderness. The highest part of the trail enters alpine terrain on Zigzag Mountain’s ridgeline. A long loop can be done by combining Horseshoe Ridge Trail with segments of Zigzag Mountain Trail - Lower #775 and Cast Creek Trail #773.

The trail begins at Cast Creek, Horseshoe Ridge, Sandy River Trailhead near Riley Horse Camp, and ends at Trail #775. The trail begins in what is known as the “Old Maid Flat” area. The ¾ mile of this trail is relatively flat.

The bridge ¾ mile into the trail at Lost Creek is damaged and is currently UNUSABLE.

At Lost Creek, there is an area for stock to ford. The trail begins a steady 3.9 mile climb along Horseshoe Ridge. The trail ends as it breaks out of treeline on Zigzag Mountain.
