The Hunter Mountain Road connects the Saline Valley Road at South Pass in the west to Ulida Flat, southeast of Racetrack Valley. The western section, described here, climbs from South Pass to Hunter Spring Road up a steep canyon to gain the plateau. Along the climb there are several springs, and the road can be muddy.

The plateau is a rocky area of rolling hills forested with pinyon pines. The summit of Hunter Mountain is on the west edge of the plateau. The northeast area of the plateau is home to wild horses in the vicinity of Spanish Spring.
