Trail 493 is much better as a descent than as a climb. The upper half is very rocky, with extended scree sections. The lower half is nearly continual root steps. Watch for hikers coming up from the campground, and ride courteously. To follow trail 493 back to Crystal Lake to complete the loop, stay left at the junction with Trail 445-A, which descends to the Crystal Cascades Trailhead, located down the access road below the lake.
