This is a very solid climb. It will be a rare person who would have any hope of riding up this hill - expect to be taking your bike for a walk. Alternatively this track makes a great walk without the bike
These tracks are annually closed for fawning between 20 November and 20 December.

From the carpark follow the poled route on the true right of Stewart Creek until it reaches a 4WD track. From here a steep and rocky climb winds up to a skyline ridge.
On the ridge, follow the signs to either 1385 m Isthmus Peak (to the right) or Matatiaho Conservation Area (to the left). There is no public access beyond the conservation area.
Return to the Stewart Creek carpark by the same route. Check your brake pads are in good condition before this ride.
There is a safari hunting operation on this station, give way to game animals, especially during the March to May roar.

Access Info

Stewart Creek carpark is just off the Lake Hawea section of SH6, 30 minutes drive from Wanaka Township. Car park is on the opposite side of the road to the track start. Follow DOC signs.

the section 1km is a crazy bike carry, up a 3:1 face of rock... honestly, this is a lovely walk, that would be totally spoiled by pushing a bike.

Like the description says: "It will be a rare person who would have any hope of riding up this hill". You do need proper some low speed gearing and/or strong legs to ride this trail uphill. Something that's around 0.5-0.55 ratio in the lowest gear, eg. 24/50 will allow you to ride all but one short 20 meter hike-a-bike section. Overall it's a nice uphill challenge but if you expect to pedal it with 32T+ chainring up front welcome to a world of pain Smile

Apart from a singletrack in the bottom part it's all a wide doubletrack / 4WD trail, so from riding perspective nothing spectacular, but the views from the top are well worth the climb.
