Spectacular scenery at the edge of Mesa de Las Viejas is one of the key draws to the trail. Several switchbacks down into Joaquin Canyon are something to consider before taking horses or someone who may not be an experienced hiker. Further down into Joaquin Canyon, the trail continues into the Coyote Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest.
