Joel's Trail, named after Elizabethtown local Joel Harwood, who passed at an early age. Friends and family made a lasting tribute with the creation of this trail, the Memorial Benches that adorn both the beginning, and the end at the summit. A solar-powered lit tree enhances the site in the dark of nite.

Very beautiful surrounding view from the top, clearly the premier destination in terms of a lookout, or vantage point in the Blueberry Hill Trails System. It begins at the "Joel's Trail" sign up at the top of Bronson Way in between the Cabin Trail (#21), and the Ridge Trail (#19). You can drive most vehicles to this location and park. There is additional parking just down the hill at the Wreath Trail junction.

The trail begins at the corner and starts into the forest, passing first the beautiful welcoming marble bench, placed as a Memorial to the trail's namesake, Joel Harwood. The trail climbs gradually, with the slope going down on the right side, until after several hundred yards the first turn is reached. A switchback turn, placing the downward slope now on rider's left side, it continues much the same as the first leg, gradually climbing as it hugs the side-slope, passing between trees and rocks, boulders and roots are consistently present in the trail's path. Negotiating the line is important. A fall down the slope could result in serious injury, or perhaps even worse.

At the second turn, also a switchback, there is a curious orange ribbon hanging conspicuously. Look carefully to the West - toward Bronson Way - and you will see the road thru the trees. Access to the 2nd turn is possible from Bronson Way if one chose to omit the first two switchbacks.

Now on the third leg of the ride, in between the second and third turns, the trail continues to be narrow, technically challenging, with many dips and swales to gain momentum and power up the inclines. Many rocks and roots are in the trail's path. After the third turn - also a sharp switchback, the trail runs yet again back towards Bronson, where the next turn is less of a switchback and more of a sweeping turn. The slope is on the left, and the trail begins to swing round to the West and Northwest slope of the hill.

The fifth and sixth turns lead you into the couloir, and crosses the little drainage on a narrow bridge after a short downhill. Crossing the bridge the trail continues round the mountain to the seventh and eighth turns, the latter being at the Great Cairn - a large boulder with a pleasant-looking cairn sitting on it's top. Now the trail sweeps right again, the slope on your right as it crosses the Grand Couloir, a large basin amphitheater with a very large cut log allowing passage.

Now in between the eighth and ninth turn, the trail steepens a bit as it climbs out of the bottom of the drainage and onto the summit cone. The ninth turn is on the dome itself and leads now thru the summit woods, the sky and horizon clearly visible thru the trees. The last turn puts the slope on the right once again, for the last time, as the summit rock looms ahead. Momentum can carry you to the last pedal stroke or two necessary to gain the summit itself whilst still pedaling. A superior view rewards the hardy cyclist. A marble bench similar to the one at the start of the trail sits atop the summit. The inscription reads: "It's easier to go down a hill, than up it... But the view, is much better at the top."

From Joel's friends and family, enjoy!!
