The Knolls are part of the same diabase traprock formation as the Barndoor Hills. Diabase is a fine-grained rock made when lava cools slowly. In this case, the lava moved up into fractures in sandstone deep in the Connecticut Rift Zone. The Metacomet Ridge lava flows made it to the surface and that rock has an even finer grain, as it cooled faster and the crystals did not have time to grow. This terrific paper explains how the rocks under your feet came to be.
