The Knot, utilizing segments of Coquina and Hilltop trails, parallels itself to create multiple riding or hiking options. The Knot was added to the park in 2013 by members of Midlands SORBA and the Sumter ChainGang with reroutes added in 2017 to avoid eroded areas on Coquina and Hilltop trails. The second trail added since Poinsett was opened to cyclists, more trails were built over the next few years. The Knot is part of the Southern Classic Mountain Bike Racing Series racecourse.

The Bighill segment is a fast ride on a narrow firebreak and singletrack. A downhill at the end rewards your efforts on the Knot.

The Knot is marked with round, aluminum tags with a black background and shares segments of Coquina (lime green) and Hilltop (red) trails.

Access Info

To get to the Knot, from TS 1 follow the Coquina trail. The Knot splits from the Coquina at TS 32. This segment of the Knot, added in 2017, bypasses part of the Coquina. Continue right back onto the Coquina at TS 33 and continue on past the shelter. At the exclusion fence, TS 4, take the Knot to the right onto the park boundary. This is the Poinsett Park boundary with Manchester State Forest and the western side of the Knot. Shortly past TS 4, the Knot splits into Hi and Lo segments. Hi Knot will keep you on the park boundary and is flat with one dip along the way all the way to the small bridge at the southern tip of the Knot. The Lo Knot at the Hi/Lo split (added in 2017) will intersect onto the Hilltop trail at TS 34. Take a right and follow the Hilltop trail for a short way. At the bottom of a short downhill, continue straight onto the Knot at TS 17. The Lo Knot will intersect the Hi Knot again at TS 35 and you will turn left onto the Hi Knot down to TS 6 where the trail splits into Hi/Lo Knot options again. Lo Knot is the more challenging route while Hi Knot is flat all the way to the small bridge at the southern tip of the Knot with one dip along the way.
After the bridge, continue back into the woods to the eastern side of the Knot and the Hi/Lo split at TS 8. Lo Knot is more challenging and ends with a strenuous climb at the end. Hi Knot is mostly flat and fast with a few climbs. At TS 9 (wood benches nearby), continue on the Knot to Park Rd at TS 14. From here, Splice trail leads to the Whippoorwill trailhead or the parking lot.
