The Moalepe trailhead is gated to prevent vehicle entry, but I understand it is otherwise, a multi-use trail (hiking, biking, equestrian). It is a fairly smooth packed dirt trail varying from dirt road (lower reaches) to single-track (upper areas). When I rode, they had apparently had little rain for the previous 2 months, so there was almost no mud, The ground was nicely tacky and dust-free. There was some evidence of minor erosion of the trail in the steeper parts and on some of the wider road sections, where the ground had been washed out by previous rain water. I understand it can be quite slippery when wet
The Moalepe Trail, starts off as a gentle climbing gravel road, but soon changes to only one of the tracks favored and then single-track, with some winding up and down near the summit. There are great views of surrounding forest near the top as you ride along a clear ridge and then descent a bit and traverse to the picnic area (flat, grassy meadow with picnic tables and shelter) at the end of the Kuilau Ridge Trail. The Kuilau Ridge Trail is a fun, easy downhill ride, which changes to a wider dirt road near the bottom reaches, ending at the Kuilau Ridge trailhead, near the Kealau Arobretum, with a similar yellow gate to the one at the other end. You could easily ride it in either direction, however, I think starting at the Moalepe end might be easiest.

I rode from the Moalepe Trail end, parking at the intersection of Olohena Rd and Waipouli Rd, where there is enough parking for a few cars. Completing the loop back to the car via Kuamoo Rd, Opeakaa Rd, Puuopae Rd and Oholena Rd, was not nearly as hilly as I expected it might be.
