Lightning Ridge Trail is not a difficult hike, although it does involve an elevation change of about 250 feet. Switchbacks along the way make it pretty easy to handle, even for novices.
In winter, the gates to the Horse Heaven campground, where the trail head is located, are closed. But you can park just outside the gates to bike Lightning Ridge.
You need a National Forest Adventure Pass to park there, or on any national forestland. Adventure Passes can be bought in Laguna at the Visitor Information Center, which is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays. Passes are $5 for a day or $30 for an annual pass. Best time to visit is summer and winter. Semi-sparse brush, many side trails, Laguna Meadows, view of Storm Canyon and the desert.
I-8 east to Sunrise Highway to the Laguna Campground. Parking is available near the amphitheater in the campground.
