Lizard Lake Trail is a wilderness trail that climbs from Cedar Valley Road though old growth cedar forest to a very small tarn lake at treeline.

The trail climbs steeply through old growth cedar and alder jungle for 2.4 km and ends in the open alpine at Lizard Lake. The trail can be quite overgrown.

From Lizard Lake you can follow a faint trail and hike to the pass (1,880m) that looks down into the Sand Creek.

Safety note: You are in bear country, so bear spray is advised.

Access Info

Drive out of Fernie heading South (Cranbrook direction) for 3km to Mt Fernie Provincial Park. Turn right in to the park and head up the Island Lake Road for 2.5km from the highway. You will come to a wooden arch announcing Island Lake property, with a large parking lot on the left. Park in there and then look for the Rail Trail signs on the left of the parking lot.

Follow the Rail Trail for the first 400 metres and then turn left onto an old logging road across Lizard Creek (no bridge). Take the right fork after crossing Lizard Creek and follow this old road to the start of the Lizard Lake Trail , about 1 km from the parking lot.
