By far the most popular trail in the Ochoco National Forest, Lookout Mountain involves a short (1.5mile-3.5mile depending on route) climb to the open summit where you will encounter 360º panoramic views of Central Oregon. This is followed by one of the best descents in Oregon - 3,000' over the course of 7 miles, punctuated by two short climbs. From the summit the trail begins with a very difficult, exposed rocky descent before dropping into fast, flowy forest. This isn't your typical Central Oregon trail - be on the watch for off-camber, blind corners, and chunky rock. The dirt here stays in great shape long after many other regional trails have turned to deep sand.

This is a multi-use trail so ride cautiously and look out for equestrians and hikers.

Access Info

Several options exist. Without a shuttle, many people opt to ride up the paved NF-42 to the upper trailhead. A shuttle option can be had by driving up the NF-42 to either the first trailhead where Round Mountain Trail joins, or further up the dirt road to the upper Lookout Mountain trailhead. For an all-day epic ride connect Round Mountain trail to make an amazing 25 mile loop.
