This section of the Loowit Trail #216 starts at the Sheep Canyon Trail #240 junction and runs south to the Butte Camp Trail #238A junction.

This section of the Loowit trail weaves in and out of timberline skirting Mount St. Helens' western slope. The trail crosses large glacial canyons and avalanche chutes that are more typical of Mount Rainier or Mount Adams, the Cascades' older and more weathered volcanoes.

Here you can enjoy the beauty of subalpine settings and a bounty of wildflowers during the summer season. Explore numerous mudflows and the rugged jumble of rock from past lava flows. Please stay on the trail and protect the fragile meadow of Upper Butte Camp where important plant succession research is taking place. Check out the panorama views to the south and east including views of Mount Hood, Mount Adams, Yale Reservoir and the Lewis River Valley.

This section of trail receives minimal maintenance and traverses the western slope of the mountain, connecting Sheep Canyon Trail #240 to Butte Camp Trail #238A. It gains little elevation on the route, descending and ascending steeply only out of the glaciated valleys.

I may have been mistaken but I thought this was one of two sections where bikes are not allowed. I'll check the NPS page again to be sure. Let me know if you see anything that indicates this is legal trail. It's odd this trail is not allowed as everything up to it is.

I rode this section yesterday. I didn't see any 'no bike' signage, so I am guessing it goes. The trail is gorgeous and worth the effort!

However, at the time of posting this, sections of the blue line on the map are incorrect/misleading. The trail actually follows the faint light gray line, and crosses a few moraines. The first of which is difficult to get out of especially with a bike. (I'll post a picture to illustrate the situation.) After exiting that moraine, there were multiple snow fields. These slowed down the pace and make it easy to loose the trail.

If you're riding in early July, especially after a big snow year, make sure to give yourself extra time to get through this section. Also be prepared to shoulder your bike up a very loose and steep pitch to get out of that first moraine.
