Lost Campground Details
This loop trail, built in 2016 and jointly funded by the Tillotson Fund and the New England Environment Grassroots Fund, explores an otherwise unused area of MBSP. With a straightforward ascent to a small plateau – the former site of an abandoned Civilian Conservation Corps campground – and a swoopy, rideable descent, Lost Campground’s smooth trail bed and manageable features make this a perfect loop for beginners. From the Hinchey junction, head uphill through oaks and fir on smooth single track built into a well-graded, abandoned road bed. On your right, you’ll notice an intersection where the end of the loop trail returns to the main stem. We recommend you ride the loop clockwise, so continue straight up! The climb tops out within .2 miles, skirting an upturned tree.
Descend .3 miles over playful, non-technical trail. Flowing through the trees, and impeded by few roots and rocks, the rideable down swings through sweeping turns, rolling lumps, and zippy curves before depositing you back on the main access trail.
*From Presidential Rail Trail: head up Hinchey trail 50 feet to a signed junction on an old road bed; go left.
*From MBSP: on Jimtown Rd, find the Hinchey trailhead; ride approximately .5 miles to a signed junction; proceed straight up the hill.
